PROJECT CALCUTTA

Nestled in the heart of Central America, Calcutta holds a captivating past that intertwines the tales of indigenous Maya civilizations, European conquest, and the influences of African diaspora.

Originally inhabited by the ancient Maya, Calcutta bore witness to their advanced societies and architectural marvels. However, it was the arrival of European explorers in the 16th century that marked a significant turning point. Spanish conquistadors, seeking riches and dominance, left an indelible mark on the land, shaping its culture and landscape.

In the 17th century, British settlers established Belize as a British colony, and Calcutta became a melting pot of cultures due to the transatlantic slave trade. African slaves brought to work on the plantations added their traditions, music, and cuisine to the cultural tapestry of the region.

Over the centuries, Calcutta evolved into a vibrant community, blending indigenous, European, African, and Caribbean influences. Today, it stands as a testament to resilience, diversity, and the enduring spirit of its people.

HOUSE OF SOLES

Lennie and Lonnie Smith found a way to channel their passion for things such as shoes, athletics and fandom for athletes into a unique business. The 16-year-old twins conceived of the idea to open a store to buy and sell gently worn or never-worn athletic shoes. That store became House of Soles. House of Soles first opened in Okemos, MI in 2020 with the goal of providing a safe space for youth to resell and shop for shoes. With the rise of covid and closing of schools, House of Soles became a safe haven for young sneaker enthusiast in their area. Now, the twins have a brand new location in the heart of East Lansing, campus of Michigan State University.
